Welcome To MacPac '08!

"My hope for our country resides in my faith in the American character, the character which proudly defends the right to think and do for ourselves, but perceives self-interest in accord with a kinship of ideals, which, when called upon, Americans will defend with their very lives." -- John McCain

We're ALL "Joe The Plumber!"

I was checking out my email the other day and ran across an article from my friend SmartCookie over at Self-Evident Truths, espousing the proposition that many, many of us are "Joe The Plumber." Joe the Plumber (more commonly known as Joe Wertzelbacher) challenged Barack Obama on his tax policy and how it would make it harder for him to purchase a small business. Check out the exchange in the video below:

Thinking about this, it occurred to me that ALL of us, every one, are "Joe The Plumber." Senator Obama would have you believe that this country is 2 classes, of the very rich, and everyone else. But that makes no sense. What we really are is a continuous spectrum of people all making their way up the ladder of success at their own pace. Will we ALL get fabulously rich? Hardly. But America is still the best place to do accomplish that, or at least move up the economic scale according to our own abilities and motivation. Why? Because our government (for the moment, anyway) is smart enough to stay out of the way while we pursue our dreams. After all, the Declaration of Independence assures us the liberty of "pursuit of happiness", it doesn't guarantee it.

There are so many of us in this country who were not born into privilege. We came from lower or lower-middle class families, where our parents didn't have much money, or privilege, or connections, but they had an abiding belief that in this country, you could accomplish ANYTHING. That belief was imparted to us, at home, in church, in school. Just a few simple guidelines, really:
  • Stay In School,
  • Work Hard,
  • Save Your Money, and most important,
  • Believe in Yourself, and in the American Dream
So that's what I did. I did it the old-fashioned way: followed those few simple guidelines, made a few smart decisions, had a bit of good luck, and took advantage of the opportunities that came my way. So what happened? I went from:
  1. Joe The Janitor, to
  2. Joe the Short Order Cook, to
  3. Joe The Theater Employee, to
  4. Joe The United States Airman, to
  5. Joe The United States Military Officer, to
  6. Joe the Highly-Paid Technical Consultant
And now Senator Obama wants to take more taxes from me, in order to "spread the wealth?" Let's think about that for a moment. If my taxes go UP, I will have less money of my own.
  • I must pay my mortgage.
  • I must eat, and travel to work, and clothe myself, and pay the costs of living in our world.
  • I must save for my retirement, because Social Security is going broke.
  • I must be able to pay for the care of my parents in their later years
  • I like to give donations to charities I care about
  • I prefer to do business with small business owners to provide goods and services to make my life better, or easier.
So, where will the money to pay those extra taxes come from? Unfortunately, I will have to make pragmatic choices about what I MUST do, and what I would LIKE TO DO. So, under an Obama administration, I will be forced to make decisions to eliminate services from:
  • Joe The Lawn Care Guy
  • Joe The Lady Who Cleans My House Every Couple of Weeks
  • Joe The Financial Advisor, Who Helps Me Plan For My Retirement
  • Joe The Physical Trainer, Who Helps Me Stay In Shape
  • Joe The General Contractor Who Does Things Around My House
  • Joe The Painter, and oh, yeah...
  • Joe The Plumber
Senator Obama, are you starting to understand that "spreading the wealth" will hurt so many more people than you will help? Perhaps you should spend more time figuring out how to tell the less-fortunate how they can pull themselves UP, rather than telling those of us who are succeeding how you are going to pull us DOWN.

AFBlue,

Great article and thank you for the nod! You inspire me, sir! Thank you for your service to our country and for everything you do here!

I love this quote: "Senator Obama, are you starting to understand that "spreading the wealth" will hurt so many more people than you will help? Perhaps you should spend more time figuring out how to tell the less-fortunate how they can pull themselves UP, rather than telling those of us who are succeeding how you are going to pull us DOWN."

SC,
Thanks for the kind words and inspiration. Let's keep pushing and fighting hard right through election day, to support the best candidate we've seen in many years!

And if we lose, we lose with our feet firmly planted, our heads held high, and our eyes firmly fixed on next time, when our voices will again be heard!

As our own John McCain said:

"...there are still things worth fighting for here, and I think I'm as ready for them as I've ever been. I won't win them all. I won't win most of them. But I'll win a few. And as long as my conceit doesn't convince me of my indispensability to America instead of my country's indispensability to me, we should both do all right."

AFBlue,
I'd also like go say great article! When the McCain site had that opportunity to create our own signs, just for fun I printed one saying:
I'm Sue
The Computer Consultant

I, too, got where I am the old fashioned way. Coming from a middle class working family, I studied hard (no genius, just lots of hard work and long hours), worked part-time during high school and college, got my business degree and joined the Air Force. After 4 years, I returned to civilian life and didn't wait to find that "perfect" job. I went to work as a secretary in the "Better Methods" department of a food processing company. What I learned there led to a job with a major S. Calif. bank in their operations analysis deptartment and that led to a position as admin. assistant to the VP of Computer Operations whose position I assumed when he moved up the ladder.

It was my own decision to relocate, at a considerable drop in pay, from the big city to a semi-rural Oregon community where I at first worked whatever temp jobs available -- from cleaning lady to data entry clerk, receptionist and part time support services staffer at the local fire department. With my background in computers, I landed a temp job that inspired me to free lance doing miscellaneous computer jobs for local small businesses. This led to an association with our MAC dealer when I bought my first Apple computer from his shop. I began to get referrals and build a base to start my own business as a computer consultant.

I'm still at the low end of the middle income scale and it will probably stay that way based on demand in this area and my own preference be a hands-on owner/operator. This is, however, my dream situation. A business that supports me and allows me to enjoy interacting with my clients and the community. And it's very, very satisfying to know that I've achieved this through my own hard work with no government handouts.

What more could I want? I have:

- A home fully paid for
- A car fully paid for
- Food on the table
- Enough money to pay the utilities, insurance, occasional home maintenance expenses and even once in a while treat myself to a lunch or dinner out.
- And enough left over to put something aside in savings for the future.

What I do NOT need and certainly do not want is an Obama government reaching into my wallet and taking whatever money they feel I don't need so they can "spread the wealth around."

Also I don NOT want the government's help because that help always comes with strings attached, strings that fetter my liberty as a free citizen.

I will probably be in the income bracket that will be receiving this "tax rebate" from Youknowwho. Yet I don't trust it one bit.

I know that sooner or later he will be coming to get that money back from me in some other form, whether it be gas taxes or worse--he may add that money to my income to place me in a higher tax bracket.

So I am in a tighter pickle than you are, because I don't want to spend it, I don't want to save it, I don't want to give it back to the government and I don't want to invest it.

It's like receiving a gift from the Godfather. I'd rather be taxed like Joe the Plumber and get it all over with.

At least I have a new nickname for Youknowwho. The Godfather

Kit, Triad,
Thanks for your contributions. The more I think of Oblahblah getting into office with an unfettered liberal Congress, the more I know we're going to face massive tax increases, especially when they realize that merely taxing the rich won't get it done for them.

So they'll just keep changing their definition of what "rich" is until they get what they want -- then they'll tax us all some more!

I wonder if Oblahblah knows the first American Revolution started over taxes?

I'm pretty sure he knows.... a revolution now would just play into his hands.

I just heard on Rush today that he does not like the constitution because it grants only "negative" liberties.

Is it at all possible that YKWHO may want to tax people for the precise purpose of making them mad?

If all the "Joe the Plumbers" lost their temper, you'd bet it would play into you know who's hands. He wants revolution.

But I'm not fooled.

It's better to grin and bear it with this imperfect govt. than risk starting over again with a socialist constitution.

Triad,
There is no such thing as negative liberties. What I admire most about our Constitution is that the Bill of Rights clearly states that "Congress shall not abridge the right of... " whatever.

In other words, the government doesn't grant us those rights (speech, press, keep and bear arms, religion, etc). Those are rights conferred on us as human beings walking the earth, as free men and women. The government cannot take those away from those, because they didn't grant them to us.

This is the fundamental difference between the liberals and conservatives -- they seem to think all power comes from the government, we know that all power comes from the governed. And we will defend the right to retain and exercise that power by any and all means necessary.
